Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.

Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a release.

Police report they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Police then discovered numerous other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement say initial examinations show the substance was probably blood from a person.

"There is still no indication as to its origin; investigators are presently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they added.

City officials said they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the public for tips.

A high-ranking representative commented the incident left him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.

"This event hits the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
