The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
