Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like typical physical horror, but beneath Together resides a deep meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
