Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
