Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the right to challenge particular calls from the official, echoing the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move comes just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
